Doug Hoerr, an ASLA Fellow and senior partner of Hoerr Schaudt, has worked on projects across nearly every design sector both nationally and internationally, including award-winning residential gardens, botanical gardens, commercial and corporate projects, civic spaces, campuses, and streetscapes. His studio is known for its inspirational use of horticulture as a transformative element.

Doug’s approach to design is rooted in craftsmanship, a hard-earned knowledge of plants, and an instinctual understanding of the land. Raised on a farm in Indiana, Doug’s upbringing nurtured a love for both the landscape and of building things. After earning a degree in Landscape Architecture from Purdue University (Distinguished Alumni Award 2010), Doug worked for a decade in Peoria at a design-build studio before taking a two-year sabbatical in England. There he worked in the gardens of some of Britain’s greatest plantsmen, immersing himself in centuries of accumulated English horticultural traditions. Shortly after returning to the States, Doug designed the ground-breaking median planters down the center of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue providing two-miles of wonderment for 20 years.

In 2008, he merged with Peter Schaudt to create Hoerr Schaudt. With studios in Chicago, Los Angeles, and Kansas City, Doug’s projects have won numerous national and local design awards and have been featured in publications such as Architectural Digest, Veranda, Traditional Home, Better Home & Gardens, and in the book "Movement and Meaning: The Landscapes of Hoerr Schaudt" published by Monicelli Press/Random House.
