DHLA assisted the Chicago Park District in creating a world-class botanic destination on the grounds of the Garfield Park Conservatory. This garden takes urban greening as its guiding principle, yet also draws upon the conservatory's historic roots, which include noted landscape pioneer, Jens Jensen. DHLA used free flowing planting design, sculpted landforms, and pathway ribbons, rather than inward-focused garden rooms, to create a rich botanical experience. Interlocking ellipses, inspired by Jensen, form the structural backbone of the garden as seen in a main oval pathway through the garden, the wide elliptical lawn at the center, and the curving shape of the lily pool. The garden emphasizes, rather than hides, its connection to the surrounding neighborhood. Framed views out of the garden include classic Chicago apartment buildings, the 'el' as it runs along the southern edge of the garden, and once Phase II is complete, a view of the city skyline from the highest point in the garden.
