Riverline Development Breaks Ground
In what marks an exciting kickoff to one of Chicago’s largest-ever developments, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, architecture and construction representatives, and members of the Hoerr Schaudt team attended the Riverline groundbreaking ceremony this afternoon. We are pleased to be part of such an accomplished team and looking forward to what the future holds for this new and ultramodern Chicago neighborhood.

Located between South Wells Street and the Chicago River and spanning from Harrison to Roosevelt Streets, Riverline features ten new buildings containing approximately 3,600 homes. Our landscape vision for this 14-acre site includes a ½ mile boardwalk along the Chicago River’s south branch and close to four acres of open green space. No doubt residents will be drawn to Riverline for its regeneration, community connection, city lifestyle, and sense of place that this new Chicago community will offer.
Drawing from the site and the history of the Chicago River, the project brings the river to its pre-industrialized natural glory. Wetlands and native ecosystems connect people with nature in an urban center. Our team faced numerous challenges, including conflicting elevations and difficult construction sequencing. Construction challenges were met by reclaiming limestone that consisted of the foundations of the historic viaducts that led to the Chicago Grand Central Rail Station over a century ago. This limestone will be reused in the development of wetlands and amphitheaters. Riverline provides a “backyard” to thousands of new residents as a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city, giving a new habitat to wildlife, fish, migratory birds and butterflies.
