Doug’s childhood farm life in Indiana was the perfect setting for his fascination with the physical and built world. From bee-keeping to reading the topography to find arrowheads, Doug immersed himself in the land. Later, Doug left a decade of experience with a design/build firm for an unorthodox sabbatical in England. There, he worked in the gardens of Britain’s greatest plantsmen, becoming the heir to centuries of accumulated English horticultural traditions.
Upon his return, Douglas began his own landscape architecture firm in Chicago. This rich body of knowledge shapes Douglas’s intuitive, hands-on approach to landscape design.
- More than 35 years of experience leading and designing landscape projects of all scales.
- International experience across nearly every sector of design, including institutional, commercial, corporate, civic, streetscape, and residential – including hundreds of private gardens in the United States alone
- Extensive expertise in project management and leadership, working in collaboration with architects, contractors, and sub-consultants to realize a client’s vision.
Civic clients as diverse as Crate&Barrel, Apple, the Chicago Botanic Garden, Northwestern University, and Houston’s Hermann Park, have engaged Doug’s expertise. His talents in the private sphere include many award-winning residences around the country and collaborations with noted architects including Robert A.M. Stern, Peter Bohlin and Peter Gluck.
