Flowers in February
February is the worst. No, I take that back. February in Chicago, now that’s the worst.
It’s cold. The sparkle of the holidays has worn off. It’s cold. The fluffy, white snow that once made our city magical has turned into a boot-ruining, cold, wet, black slush. And the worst part? The end of winter is nowhere in sight.
Did I mention it’s cold?
Last week, right when I decided I couldn’t bear one more second—there came a purple pick-me-up. Julie, the world’s best pod mate snagged some hyacinths from the Mariano’s down the street, stuck them in a jar and set them between our desks. BOOM! HAPPINESS!
We passed them back and forth for three days—never quite getting over how fantastic they smelled—thinking “If one jar of fresh cuts makes us this happy…then what if…”
Just like that–Operation FlowerBomb was born. (BOOM!)
The plan: Create and deliver 30 reminders of spring to each person in our office.
Armed with the partners’ approval, a company AmEx and the world’s most scribbly list—Julie and I met at Kennicott Brothers flower market before dawn.
We paced the aisles picking up bunches and dropping them in a Mason jar. Scrutinizing buds, judging stem quality and debating their happy factor —we held them up for each other’s approval. “Yea?….YeaYea!”
Our cart stocked and our moods instantly lifted–we grinned all the way to check out.
Back at the office it was time to get organized.
The result: 30 FlowerBombs
(2) Orange Sunstar + (2) Grape Hyacinth + (5) Purple Stock + (5) Daffodils+ (8)Ranunculus + (10) Tulips = ONE happy office!
Hopefully this post brought some cheer to your LAST MONDAY IN FEBRUARY (!!!).
If you need an extra boost-stop by the store on your way home tonight and make your own FlowerBomb– and give one to your neighbor too!
