We’re very pleased to announce that the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) Illinois Chapter commended this beautiful Chicago area residence with a 2014 Honor award!
Landscape plays the role of art in the garden design of this new home in Chicago’s North Shore. The unusually long and narrow property is surrounded by five large houses and an irregular street pattern. This combination created a challenge: how to design the landscape around the house to create privacy from neighbors without crowding it with plantings needed to screen views.
Sweeping gestures expressed in low, curving stone walls and a naturalized Midwestern plant palette define the design. Relationships between interior and exterior space were carefully delineated in collaboration with the home’s architect, Booth Hansen.
The jury commented, “This is a well thought-out space with excellent connection between the house and gardens. There is a beautiful mix of materials and planting spaces and a nice use of texture throughout.”
