Hoerr Schaudt assisted the Chicago Park District in the creation of what has been lauded as a world-class botanic destination on the grounds of the Garfield Park Conservatory. The garden takes urban greening as its guiding principle, yet also draws upon the conservatory’s historic roots, including the work of the pioneering Midwestern landscape architect Jens Jensen – the master’s concentric circle pathways, lily pools, freeform plantings, and manipulation of land forms to create views. Indeed, the garden emphasizes rather than hides its connection to its context, framing vistas of classic Chicago apartment structures and the city’s signature El trains as they pass the garden’s southern edge.
