Hoerr Schaudt developed site planning and open space strategies for areas within and surrounding the Genome Science complex, designed by SOM. Framed by historic buildings, quads, and Kenan Football Stadium, the new “Central Park” replaces an existing parking lot with a sloped open space, integrating the new building into the campus. Stone seat-walls terrace the slope and are used for outdoor classrooms and study space. For game days and special events, a portion of the space can be tented or staged for an amphitheater-like experience.
