The 39-acre headquarters for Zurich North America was designed with two priorities in mind: sustainability and employee enjoyment. Multiple green roofs are spread over almost all the main buildings, totaling over one acre. An elliptical pond collects storm water, much of which is purified by vegetation and soil filters rather than sent directly to the sewers. This rainwater harvesting coupled with careful horticulture planning reduces water usage and need for irrigation. The design also created several urban park-like settings, providing employees with enjoyable spaces for outdoor activities and gatherings. The resulting campus was the largest LEED Platinum project and the first LEED Platinum Core and Shell project in the Chicago suburbs.
